The story

The challenge

The homeowners wanted their cedar siding replaced with prefinished James Hardie board. Woodpeckers had been at the cedar, and they wanted more margin against wildfire. The tear-off found more: a ten-foot run of rot along the deck, and roof sheathing too far gone to walk on.

Our approach

We shored up the deck, rebuilt the rotted framing, and kept the siding on schedule. On the roof we replaced the sheathing, lookouts, fascia, and barge boards, and our roofers installed a standing seam metal roof. Each finding reached the homeowners with its budget impact before work continued.

The outcome

The home went into winter with new siding, sound framing, and a roof that should outlast most of us.

Inside the project

Along the deck, removing the old siding exposed rot in the ledger, rim joist, and studs. The framing was replaced before the new siding went on.
